The Seed Source Technician (SST) will assist in implementation of the tree seed and seedling supply systems that work under RTRP*, QT-Seed** and TREPA to provide diverse climate adapted species and varieties and disseminate the importance of quality tree reproductive material.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Core Technical aspects:
- In collaboration with the other project teams, the Seed Source Technician is responsible for all field activities related to seed sources development.
- Based on the species-specific priorities of integrated seed procurement/tree improvement/gene conservation, plan, prepare and implement the activities accordingly.
- In collaboration with the other project team plan, supervise and assist in national seed source exploration for priority species.
- Plan and carry out the description of existing seed sources in the country
- Collaborate with national stakeholders in gathering data to establish a tree seed source registry
- In collaboration with national partners, co-ordinate the monitoring of seed demands as per the project’s objectives
- Participate in the establishment of seed stands, ex situ stands, mother blocks, and/or seed orchards (BSOs) of selected priority species.
- Plan and assist in implementation of applied research and data recording.
- Guide trainees in seed source development and management methods.
- In collaboration with the project’s teams compile, maintain and update national seed source register.
- Carry out networking with other professionals, organizations, institutions, projects, etc. in Rwanda and the region.
- Record all relevant data, process and publish, whenever relevant, in Rwandan and international journals and other media.
2. Planning, monitoring and reporting:
- Prepare and implement annual work plans in the subject matter.
- Prepare and follow up on subject matter budgets.
- Monitor project supports the subject matter and liaise with the programme of RFA and the PTB and the Field Manager in planning, co-ordination, and supervision of the establishment of species, provenance and/or progeny orchards/mother blocks/trials/conservation stands for selected priority species on different sites and in different seed zones.
- Provide inputs to Annual work plans
- Provide inputs to Semi-annual consolidated progress reports
- Provide inputs to Communication products.
Requirements
- BSc. in a forestry/environmental/agroforestry management or similar discipline.
- Minimum of 1 year’s field work experience working within a forestry/environmental/agroforestry project.
- Experience in project coordination, GIS and data analysis software.
- Demonstrate strong network and communication skills.

Terms and conditions
•This is a Locally Recruited position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
•The duty station will be in Kigali, Rwanda.
•The initial appointment will be for 2 (two) years, inclusive of a six months probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
