The Tree Seedlings Nursery Assistant will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the tree seedling nursery in Gatsibo. The role plays a key part in ensuring the effective handling of seeds, proper seedling care, and the overall maintenance of the nursery to support high-quality seedling production for establishment of breeding seed orchards, mother blocks, and broader forest landscape restoration initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Supervise cleaning, treating, and preparing seeds before sowing.
  2. Oversee the sowing of seeds in seedbeds and the filling of containers.
  3. Ensure seedlings are watered regularly and appropriately.
  4. Manage weeding and maintain cleanliness of the nursery workplace.
  5. Regularly inspect seedlings for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate action.
  6. Supervise the pricking out of germinated seedlings into pots.
  7. Assist in tracking seedling numbers, sowing dates, pricking out dates, and survival rates.
  8. Maintain basic logs of daily nursery activities as required.
  9. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Tree Nursery Supervisor.
  10. Promptly report any issues to the nursery supervisor for further action.
  11. Assist in seed procurement, mother tree data collection, and other seed source development activities.


Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in nursery or agricultural work preferred.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate daily tasks.
  • Attention to detail and good record-keeping skills.
  • Basic understanding of plant health and pest management.
  • Willingness to perform manual tasks and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • A Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture, Forestry, or a related field is required.

Education, knowledge and experience

Terms and conditions

•This is a Locally Recruited position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
 •The duty station will be in Gatsibo, Rwanda.
 •The initial appointment will be for 2 (two) years, inclusive of a six month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
